Dawson has to be the best eleven year old boy ever! He is so polite, helpful, kind, caring, and compassionate. He has a true desire to want to do the right thing even when no one is looking. I think he really does take pleasure from helping others, and I feel like this is a personality trait more than something that can be taught. He sees me, his siblings, or neighbors needing help and volunteers to help without being asked. He is so kind and compassionate.
Dawson is also a very, very hard worker! He wants to do everything just right. During our homeschool this year, this has become more evident than ever to me. He wants to learn to do all of his subjects just the right way and turn them in perfectly. He is hard on himself is he gets a less than perfect grade (like, say a 97!) which has been something we have worked on this year-it doesn't have to be perfect! You just have to master the concept. He just wants to please, which I completely appreciate.
This year Dawson did 2 days of a golf clinic in Decatur at Point Mallard with a pro golfer there. Then he did a week-long golf camp at Canebrake. He enjoys golf and is good at it.
Dawson also played soccer in the Fall through Athens Parks and Rec. He enjoyed playing, and we very much enjoyed cheering him on!
Also, in the fall months he ran the Rocket City Kids marathon...26.2 miles! He is such a great runner! We have reached the point where he is faster than me. I can keep up, but it's faster than my normal pace. He has one of those runs that makes running look easy with his long, lean legs. He's so fast!
In the winter months he played basketball on the Celtics. He scored some baskets this season, and he enjoyed himself and his team. Again, we enjoyed cheering him on at all his games and watchin all of his practices!
Then in March he started archery. He has had a bow and arrow for a couple years now, and he really enjoys target practice with it...and he's good at it! Better than me for sure! He had so looked forward to archery, but sadly he only got to attend 2 of the archery meetings before they got canceled (thanks Corona virus!). I guess we will try to get into archery again in the fall, because he was really enjoying it. He learned that he was one of the rare ones who could use either eye as a dominate eye for shooting, and thus shoot with either hand.
This school year Dawson also enjoyed the following clubs: STEM, Art & Music, Coding, Spanish, and Running Club (led by me-and unfortunately we only got to meet time-thanks, Corona virus).
One completely new skill Dawson has added this year has been learning to play the trumpet. This could easily be the talent he is the proudest of. He got his trumpet on Halloween and started lessons the first week of November. I am beyond impressed with how far he has come and how much he has learned in just six months! He LOVES to practice. I never have to remind him. Dawson was practicing once daily, but since we have been home sooo much for the past two months he has put himself on a 2x daily practice schedule. Dawson is so driven in everything he does.
Dawson also loves running with me in the neighborhood, going on walks, riding bikes, playing basketball in the driveway, and FISHING! I think this boy would fish all day every day if he could. The great thing about this past year has been than he has gained the skill of taking his fish off the hook which is a big help and has enabled me to allow Carter and Dawson to go fishing in the neighborhood on their own a few times too. I'm so glad that Dawson (and Carter) love fishing like their Pop did.
John and I are continually proud of what a wonderful big kid Dawson has grown into. We just wish time would slow down, but it's so fun watching him grow up.
